A monument to the victims of communism was erected near the Capitol in downtown Washington. The statue replicates the figure of the “Goddess of Democracy” created from cardboard and plastic by students of the Beijing Academy of Arts on the eve of demonstrations in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square in 1989. Their version of the Statue of Liberty with oriental features was destroyed by Chinese army soldiers who crushed the rebellion, while dozens of young people died from both sides of the barricades.

The creators of the memorial declared their desire to remind the next generations of the feat of the fighters against a criminal ideology from their point of view and to glorify the winners in the Cold War. At the ceremony in June 2007, George W. Bush, then the current President of the United States, delivered a speech.
