History of Alburg, Vermont
The town of Alburg, Vermont has a long and rich history that dates back to the early 1700s. In 1763, the first permanent settlement was established by a group of French-Canadian immigrants. The settlers named their new home Alburg after their leader, Louis d’Alburg.
The settlers were primarily farmers and fishermen who made their living off the land, growing crops and harvesting fish from the nearby lakes and rivers. They built churches, schools, mills, and stores to meet their needs. As the population grew in the late 1700s and early 1800s, so too did its economy. A ferry service was established across Lake Champlain to connect Alburg with Canada as well as other towns in Vermont.
In 1815, Alburg was incorporated as a town within Grand Isle County. By this time it had become an important center for shipping and trade with Canada as well as an important port for steamboats traveling up and down Lake Champlain. It also became an important stop on the Underground Railroad during the Civil War era when many fugitive slaves sought refuge in Canada via Alburg’s ferry service across Lake Champlain.
In 1837, a railroad line was built through Alburg that connected Montreal to New York City; this helped to further spur economic growth in the town as goods could now be transported more easily between these two cities by rail rather than by boat or wagon on land routes.
